4th Grade’s focus questions for the Cathedral Project are: What plans must be made to build a Cathedral? How do architects do their work?
Mickey Sutliff, architect at BarberMcMurry, made a presentation to students on the process of developing plans for new construction. It involves the program phase, where the architect and the client go over all needs for the project, drawings, problem solving, and collaboration.
Students researched the following architecture styles: modern, classical, renaissance, and medieval. We compared and contrasted the different aspects of each and locations of where these styles were found. Mickey spoke to the students about how we all are working together and collaborating (the school community, engineers, architects, and builders). He mentioned that the style is reflective of the Renaissance era. The students were also able to virtually see the inside of the Cathedral…via a Google box or glasses. Some highlights include:
The Cathedral will be 147 ft tall (to the top of the dome)
Geography matters as far as materials go
