for $25,000 on Northshore Drive in West Knoxville for a church, school, convent and rectory. In the summer of 1954, Bishop Adrian gave the word to go ahead with the construction of the new parish, later named Sacred Heart, with plans for a school to be opened in September 1955. Sacred Heart Cathedral School resides on a 28 acre campus on Northshore Drive (SR 332) in West Knoxville. It emcompasses the church, the parish office, the Paraclete bookstore and the preschool. In September 1956, Sacred Heart School opened with nine classrooms. In 1975, the convent was renovated to provide more classrooms. Three years later in 1978, the gymnasium and library were built along with 4 additional classrooms. 1986 saw the completion of the art studio, science lab and computer lab and 2 Kindergarten rooms were added. School enrollment continued to grow and in 1993 a new wing was built on, adding 11 new classrooms, a teacher work room and the Youth Ministry Center. And our most recent venture is “Project Facelift”, a newly constructed front entranceway consisting of a landscaped courtyard, benches, sign and flagpole and a beautiful Italian granite statue of “Jesus and the Children”.
Presently, our physical plant consists of 110,000 square feet, housing over 30 air-conditioned classrooms, cafeteria, gymnasium, library-media center, art, Spanish and Music rooms, science lab and a 30 station computer lab. Additionally, the library has 10 computers for student use and each classroom has 5 computers.
