Sacred Heart 1956 Classroom |
The origin of Sacred Heart Parish goes back to the year 1952. Following the directions of The Most Reverend William L. Adrian, Bishop of Nashville, and Father Christopher Murray, it was decided that the new parish and school should be located in the Bearden community of western Knoxville. The general area of Northshore drive was fixed upon, as this region had access to public utilities and seemed to meet the needs of future parishioner. On November 19, 1952, Father Christopher P. Murray bought almost six acres from Mr. W.L. Towle for $25,000 on Northshore Drive in West Knoxville for a church, school, convent and rectory. In the summer of 1954, Bishop Adrian gave the word to go ahead with the construction of the new parish, later named Sacred Heart, with plans for a school to be opened in September 1955. |

Father Edward Dolan succeeded Father Murray who was transferred to Lawrenceburg, Tennessee which pushed back the opening of the school. Construction continued and The Sacred Heart School opened officially on September 4, 1956 with 132 pupils enrolled. The faculty consisted of two Sisters of Mercy and three lay teachers. Sister Mary Celestine, R.S. M. became the first Principal. Sister Pacelli, R.S. M., the other Sister, had charge of the First Grade. The lay teachers were Mrs. Catherine Foley, Mrs. Isabel Deadrick and Mrs. H.R. Trickey. |
