SHCS is fortunate to participate in the HABIT (Human-Animal Bond in Tennessee) program. This is a University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine program that provides trained dogs and their sponsors the opportunity to work in our school. These dogs have been medically and behaviorally screened by the University’s HABIT program. The HABIT program gives children the opportunity to work with therapy dogs to encourage reluctant readers, give comfort, reduce stress, and promote a positive relationship between dogs and humans.
Jeanne Nix, a SHCS parent, has had her two dogs, Goldie and Ginger, HABIT certified. Ginger has visited with Mrs. Hanks’ class this year and Goldie visited Mrs. Hays’ and Mrs. Iman’s classrooms. They spent approximately 10-15 minutes with each child within a small group setting to share a book or just enjoy each other’s company. All of the teachers saw many positive improvements in their students’ reading and overall confidence.
We are excited that this wonderful program is growing at Sacred Heart and that we are able to provide this enrichment activity for our students during the 2015-2016 school year but we need your help! Do you think your dog could qualify? There is a general information meeting Thursday, May 21st from 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. at the UT College of Veterinary Medicine in Room A118. Please go HERE for more information.
We know it will continue to be both an emotional and educational experience for our students. Thank you in advance for your consideration of getting your dog certified!
